3 Quick Tips for Cleaning the Refrigerator

Few things in the kitchen get used as much as the refrigerator, which is why it’s so important to keep it clean. Without regular cleaning, stains and food residue can build up inside the fridge. Not to mention, keeping it clean keeps food fresher and gives you more space. Ideally, you should plan to do a thorough cleaning inside and outside of your fridge every few months. However, if you are interested in a quick clean up, here are a few of our tips:

                   1. Empty the fridge.

First thing is to empty your fridge of its contents. Ideally, choose to clean out your fridge on a day where you don’t have nearly as many food items inside. Be sure to get a cooler – or two – and fill it with ice to put any perishable items inside. As you take out each item, toss out foods that have expired, leftovers that have hung around too long, and anything that has a funny smell.

                   2. Clean the removable parts.

Take out all of the drawers and shelves from the fridge. Get a fragrance-free dish soap and scrub down the shelves with warm water. You’ll want to hand wash these items with a gentle dishcloth. Make sure you rinse thoroughly. Also, if you haven’t cleaned your fridge in a while, you may need to wipe off food items like olive jars, sauces, containers, etc. Wipe these items off with a wet sponge and dry them thoroughly. Don’t put them back in the fridge quite yet, so leave them to dry while you begin the next step.

                   3. Clean the interior of the fridge.

While every removable part is outside of your fridge (i.e., food, drawers, shelves), it’s time to clean the inside of your fridge. Many people avoid harsh chemicals inside their fridge, so look for an eco-friendly all-purpose cleaner. You use baking soda and water as a cleaner. To do so, fill a spray bottle with a solution of two tablespoons of baking soda and a quart of water. Apply your cleaning solution to your interior surfaces, such as the walls, door, and non-removable shelves inside. Wipe down thoroughly and use a scrub brush for any stubborn stains. Finish up by drying everything with a clean towel.

Before you put everything back, one of the last things you will want to do is open up a container of baking soda inside your fridge and place it in the back of your bottom shelf. Doing so will eliminate any future odors from stinking up your fridge. With these quick tips, you will have a clean fridge in no time.
